The outage was a result of the failure to caching service that interfaces with Smartphones and devices using Exchange ActiveSync. Microsoft temporarily blocked access via Exchange ActiveSync to stabilize the outages which allowed them to restore and access Outlook.com and SkyDrive.
Users devices received errors and they continuously tried to connect to Microsoft’s services. Microsoft could not handle the influx of traffic resulting in some users not being about to access their Outlook.com email and unable to share their SkyDrive files via email.
