BMW Launches i3 Electric Car

BMW Launches i3 Electric Car

bmw i3BMW launches it’s first electric car the i3 with eDrive. BMW eDrive is BMW innovative new development in BMW Efficient Dynamics technology.

The i3 specs are:  125 kW/170 hp (horsepower), 250 Nm/184 pound-feet of torque, and 2500 pounds.  The i3 will go from 0 to 60 mph in 7.2 seconds and the top at electronically limits of 93 MPH for ultimate efficiency.  The i3 is like all BMWs, it has the perfect 50:20 front-to-rear weight distribution which provides BMW’s handling.

You can travel 80 to 100 miles on the 22 kWh lithium-ion battery. The i3 takes 3 hours to charge over a 220-volt line and into a massive 7.4 kW on-board charger, one of the largest on the market.  BMW claims that the charge time can be reduced to 30 minutes when using an optional DC Combo Fast Charging setup.

The i3 structure is comprised of carbon fiber reinforced plastic.  It is ultra-safe and as strong as metal while being 50% lighter than steel and 30% lighter than aluminum.  The light weight means more efficiency and allows DMS to use a smaller, 450 pound battery enclosed in an aluminum shell to remove weight, boosting driving range and reducing charge times.  For more on the i3 Click Here.
